A strange announcement is placed in the local paper revealing a planned murder at the Victorian Home of Miss Letitia Blacklock. The victim is not one of the several occupants of the home, but of an unexpected and unknown visitor. What follows is a classic Christie puzzle of mixed motives, concealed identities and a second death.
